FLIERS SEPARATE IN FOG Wetzler, 194 North Seventeenth street, lie was being: held last night in the city jail (or grand jury action. The police say the missingr jewelry was found in his possession. Mrs. Wetrler reported to the police that her home was robbed a week ago. She said that a. day after the robbery Odell came to her and said he was a detective and would aid her in recov ering1 the jewelry. She said she waited patiently for results for several days, but when he failed to show any speed, she determined to call the police bu reau. As soon as they had interviewed Mrs. Wetzler the police inspectors started in search of thj amateur detective. After subjecting him to a stiff exam ination they searched him and found the jewelry. They are now looking for the 200. Odell says he is an engineer and came to Portland recently from Taft, Cal. Jlosebnrs anl Salem Are Expected to Be Baws of Airmen Hunting I for Torcst Blazes. SALEM. Or., July SI. (Special.) Lieutenant "Kmil C. Kiel and Sergeant Fra.nk McKee, assigned to forest fire patrol work in Oregon, arrived here by airplane at 4:43 P. M. today from Camp Lewi.t. They made the flight from Portland to Salem in 45 minutes, covering- tli- beaten path along tile route of the Southern Pacific rail road. Tito aviators were accompanied on the trip by Mis.s Henrietta McKau Khan of Portland and K. 11. Scalier, forestry examiner. Although tlic conference between the covernor, aviators, ttate forester anil other officials had to be delayed until tomorrow, it is believed here that one of the planes will be assigned to .Rose burg and the other to Salem. The Koseburg plne will work south as far as the California line and as far north as Kugene while the Salem plane will w-ork south as far as Kugene and north as far as Portland. Portland and Kugene are said to have bid for at least one of the planes, hut because of the cities' topographical location it is not believed planes will be assigned to each city. HOSEBCRO, Or.. July 31. (Special.) According to a statement made by For ester S. C. Barterum of this"city. one of the airplanes which left Tacoma for patrol work in the forest districts of Oregon will be used in the Umpqua forests of Douglas county. Maps of the region to be patrolled are at pres ent being prepared In the local forestry oltlces,. and these are plaining for ingiii or approximately Ui0 miles per oay. The plane is expected to come here at once, as the fire situation in the Ca cades to the east is assuming serious proportions. GHEHALIS, Wash., July SI. (Spe rial.) Lieutenant Kiel and Sergeant McKee, army aviators landed at the state training school station hero at noon to replenish gas and oil. Lieu tenant Kiel, when he resumed the trip to Salem became lost in heavy clouds and was forced to turn back, starting again later in the day. INDUSTRIAL ROAD OPENED Clarke County to Start Improvement Work at Once. VANCOrVKR. Wash.. July 31. (Spe cial.) The way was cleared this morn ing for the improvement of the river Industrial road at a meeting of rail road officials and country commission ers. The railroad spur track, which was used for unloading material at the Stamlifer shipyards, will be re moved and relocated, and permission was given the county to secure rock from railroad land. The road, which has alieady been '.pened, will start in at about Kleventh street and continue down the river nbout four miles, giving access to ex tensive industrial sites. The American Canning company and the California Karrel company already own sites con tiguous to the road. At the site of the American Can company- the road has heen moved back tiO'.i feet from the river front, giving the firm the land between the river and the road. In addition to the extensive Indus trial property, the road taps a ich agricultural district heretofore almost cut off from Vancouver. " Federal Conciliator on Scene to Open Conferences Between Employers and Timber Workers. SPOKANE. Wash.. July 31 (Sp- cial.) Striking members of the Inter national Timber Workers' union were deadlocked this afternoon with the mill operators and the Loyal Lsion of Log gers and Lumbermen in the Coeur d'Alene Lumber mill walkout. Both sides were standine pat, claim ing victory, with the only outlook for conciliation appearing through the ef forts of General Robert M. McWade, arbitrator of the department of labor, although neither side is willing to con cede an inch. The figrht is steadily as suming the appearance of the first brush between the four Ls and the Timber Workers' union, in which a vic tory might have a far-reachinsr influ ence throughout the northwest. "I have a 100 per cent record, and I don't expect to break it now," said Gen eral McWade this afternoon. "I am hopeful of brinsrinsj the strike to a harmonious conclusion." General McWade, after -i informal conference with strike leaders and Huntington Taylor, manager of the Rutledge Timber company, today be gan a tour of inspection of the three big mills where the walkout took place, the Rutledge. Blackwell and Winton. and he also expected to visit the mill of the Atlas Tie company. Following mis tour ne win again open confer ences with the employers, and em ployes. Salem Alderman Quits.
